Sterling School Park

Milton Township acquired the Sterling Elementary School property from the North Central School Board in the spring of 2011.  The property consists of 4.5 acres with existing baseball field, basketball court, gazebo and playground equipment.  In the spring of 2012, the property was formally named "Sterling School Park" in honor of the wonderful school that served the community until its' removal in 2010 due to age and the construction of a new elementary school.(Sterling and Burbank Elementary Schools were combined and all elementary students are now attending the new Norwayne Elementary School on Cleveland Rd., Creston.)

The original school bell was returned to Milton Township in the spring of 2012.  Retired Sterling schoolteacher, Rose Cunningham, spearheaded the efforts to have the bell returned to Sterling.  The park is open to all during daylight hours and is a short walk or bike ride from the Rails to Trails on the north edge of town.  In the fall of 2012, the park received grant monies from the Wayne County Community Foundation and the Maibach Family Foundation to purchase items for the park.  Those funds have provided new picnic tables, benches, volleyball net (bring your own ball!) and barbeque grill located near the gazebo.

The Trustees will be holding annual spring and summer work sessions at the park to help maintain the property.  The work sessions will be posted on the sign board at the front of the park and anyone wishing to volunteer their time is encouraged to stop by and help.  We hope that you will visit the park often and help keep it a safe and clean environment for children and families to play for years to come!

The original Sterling School bell is displayed at the park on Kauffman Avenue.  The brick monument housing the bell was donated and constructed by local volunteer craftsman, Ralph Gasser.  The granite insert with the park name was donated and created by local craftsman, T.J. Pertee of Pertee Monuments.  We are thankful for the many residents of Milton Township who willingly donate their time and talents to projects and fundraisers in the community.
